How to Cancel HBO Subscription?

HBO Max is a rather popular streaming service that is extremely easy to subscribe to. However, unsubscribing from such a service is not as easy of a process, and some people might not even know how to do that in the first place. As such, we’re presenting this article to explain all of the ways that you can use to cancel your HBO Max subscription.

Manage subscriptions on iPhone

When it comes to the modern market of video streaming services, there is a vast variety of choices that you can make – and you don't really have to settle for a single one, either. This is the main reason why each service is pretty much doing its own thing and attracting new users via original content and specific libraries of shows, movies, and so on.

HBO Max is one of these services, standing quite firm on the market, and offering a plethora of different content for a monthly payment of $15. It offers up to five separate accounts per single subscription, and the price is quite good for what you're getting.

Cancelling HBO Max subscription

However, sooner or later the question of "How to cancel my HBO subscription?" might arise, for pretty much any reason – maybe you're just trying to control your monthly spendings, or you haven't used the subscription for a while now, or maybe you're switching to a different streaming service in the first place.

The reason is not that important here, what is important is that there are only two main ways to cancel HBO subscription – through either a website, or via their own mobile app (available for both Android and iOS). What's interesting here is that HBO is one of the few services that do not have the requirement to cancel their subscription strictly using Apple's own subscription management menu when paying for your HBO Max with iOS.

HBO is not the only service that does that, either. There are also several other examples that work in a similar way and can avoid interacting with Apple in such a way – for example, there's Spotify, Netflix, and so on. This is the reason why the process of cancelling a subscription would be similar for both Apple and Android smartphones.

Accessing billing page from the mobile device

There's also going to be a different nuance, but we're going to talk about that a bit later. Right now, we have to get to the settings menu of your HBO Max account – on both your web browser and inside of your HBO Max application. When you're using a mobile app (doesn't matter if you're using iOS or Android), here's what you have to do:

  1. Go to your profile

    After opening the app in question, you'll see the main page of this application. From there, you'll have to find a "profile" icon – it should be located in the lower left segment of the screen – and click it.

  2. Go to your profile

    On the profile screen, you can see the name of your profile, as well as some other information about your specific settings or preferences, like downloaded content, watched content, and so on. To continue, you'll have to click the little cogwheel icon on the top left corner – that's how you can access the "Settings" menu.

  3. Go to Billing information

    The "Settings" menu would present you with a list of options in the form of categories, but the one we're looking for is "Billing information". Click this one to proceed.

Getting to the billing page using web browser

That's how we get to the billing menu in the mobile app. If we're talking about using the HBO Max website, the process is even easier:

  1. Log in to the HBO Max website with your credentials;

  2. Access user settings by using the "Profile" icon on the top of the page;

  3. From the list of different settings groups, you'll have to choose "Billing information", once again.

Since we're now at the "Billing information" page in both cases, it is time to explain another nuance about cancelling an HBO Max subscription – billing type. As with many other services, you can subscribe to HBO Max directly, or via one of the many other services – such as AT&T, Hulu, Samsung, Xfinity, Roku, Amazon, and so on.

Two ways to cancel your HBO subscription

You'll only be able to see the "Manage subscription" option in the billing menu if you've subscribed directly to HBO Max, and clicking this option would give you the ability to either edit your payment method or to cancel HBO subscription altogether.

If that is not the case and you've subscribed to HBO Max using one of the many third-party services, you'll only see the "Learn more" button on the billing page, accompanied with the information about the third-party service of your choice – usually presented in the form of "Your HBO Max subscription is billed through [Service_Name]".

Clicking the "Learn more" button should either lead you to a different app that you've used to subscribe to HBO Max, or to a website that you've used to do so – in this case, you'll have to log into your account within that service, as well, to be able to cancel HBO Max subscription.

However, there are also some nuances when it comes to specific third-party services. Let's look at a few of these examples.

HBO Max and Xfinity

If your main TV services provider is Xfinity, and you're looking for a way to manage your HBO subscription there, you'll find that there are a few different cases with different solutions. The first one is the obvious one – if your Xfinity subscription plan already includes HBO (not the streaming service, but the channel provider), then you're getting your HBO Max for free as long as you keep paying for it, and cancelling this one is as simple as changing your subscription plan or cancelling the entire service altogether.

However, if your HBO Max subscription is a separate bill from your Xfinity subscription, then the only solution for you would be to contact the Xfinity assistant and ask them to remove HBO Max from your account.

HBO Max and Roku

Another possibility would be to bill your HBO Max subscription using Roku. The process of cancelling such a subscription is a bit more simple this time around. You can access the Roku account management page using the method we've described above, and use that page to cancel your subscription.

Additionally, you can also do that with the Roku streaming device itself – all you have to do is to choose the HBO Max service using a Roku remote and press the asterisk/star button. This would give you the ability to access a number of options, including a "Manage subscription" page that you can use to cancel your HBO Max subscription.

HBO Max and Amazon

The last, but definitely not the least, example on our list is Amazon – and there are also two ways to cancel your HBO Max subscription here. First, you can try and cancel it using Amazon Appstore by going to "Your apps" and finding a "Digital content and devices" option. From that point forward, all you have to do is to click "Manage" button and choose "Your subscriptions". This should give you the ability to manage all of your Amazon-related subscriptions, including HBO Max, if you've billed it using Amazon.

An alternative here would be to manage your subscription inside of the Amazon Prime Video service – here, you'll have to go to a different page of your Amazon account, sign in, and then click "Your channels" to be presented with a list of all the subscriptions that you currently have. All you have to do after that is to click "Cancel subscription" near the HBO Max section.
